focalScan is a room measuring app for iPhone and iPad. This page explains what the app keeps on your device, what it sends off it, who receives it and why. It also covers this website.

The short version

• Your rooms, scans, photos and notes are kept on your device, and in your own iCloud if you turn on sync. We can't see them.
• The app has no ads, no tracking and no analytics tools. We don't sell or share your data for advertising.
• The AI assistant asks your permission first. After you allow it, your question and some details about the room go through our server to the AI service that answers it.
• To count free uses and check subscriptions, the app sends a random app identifier to our server. It isn't linked to your name or email.

Your rooms, scans, photos and notes

Everything you make in focalScan is stored in the app on your device: LiDAR scans, measurements, the 3D model, photos, the scan video, notes, clients and saved estimates.

iCloud sync (optional). If you turn on Sync with iCloud in Settings, your rooms are copied to your private iCloud database through Apple's CloudKit, so they show up on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That copy is kept by Apple under your Apple Account, and we have no access to it. Apple's privacy policy applies.

Files you share. Backups, Export Project, PDF reports and Share with Your AI make files that go only where you send them: Files, AirDrop, Mail, or an app you choose. When you send a room to an AI app of your choice, that app's own privacy policy applies.

The AI assistant

The first time you open the assistant, it asks your permission. Nothing is sent until you tap Allow; Not Now closes the assistant. After that, when you ask a question, the app sends your question and the earlier messages in that conversation; details from the screen you asked from: the room's name (which can include the client's name), wall and floor area, ceiling height, perimeter, and the calculator you're in; and the app's language, units and version.

This goes to our server, which runs on Google Firebase, and from there to the AI service that writes the answer. Some questions use web search to look something up. We don't save your questions or answers. The AI service handles them under its terms for business customers: by default they aren't used to train its models, and it may keep them for a limited time, for example for safety.

AI answers are estimates and can contain mistakes. Always check measurements and amounts before buying materials.

If you tap the speaker on an answer, the text of that answer is sent to a text-to-speech service to read it aloud. Only the answer's text is sent.

If you ask by voice, or dictate notes, your speech is turned into text by Apple's speech recognition, which may be processed by Apple.

Please don't put anything in a question that you wouldn't want sent to these services.

Free uses and subscriptions

focalScan has a free tier with a set number of scans, saves, AI questions, manual entries, exports and PDFs. To count them and to check subscriptions, our server (Google Firebase, Cloud Firestore) keeps a record with: a random identifier the app creates the first time it opens (kept in your device's Keychain) and the app identifier Apple gives focalScan on your device; the app version, and when you accepted the in-app disclaimer; how many free actions you've used; and your subscription status. When you subscribe, the app sends Apple's signed record of the purchase (the product, transaction ID and dates) so our server can confirm it, and Apple tells our server when a subscription renews, ends or is refunded.

Apple handles all payments. We never see your name, Apple Account or payment details. This record is used only to run the free tier and your subscription, not for ads or tracking.

Camera, microphone and photos

focalScan uses the camera and LiDAR to scan rooms and take room photos, the microphone and speech recognition for voice questions and dictated notes, and your photo library when you add photos to a room. They're used only while you're using those features, and only inside the app.

This website

focalscan.com uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. Google Analytics uses cookies and receives your IP address and browser details; we don't send it your name or email. You can block it with your browser's privacy settings or Google's opt-out add-on.

The support chat sends what you type, and the conversation so far, to our server and on to an AI service to write a reply. We don't store the chat.

What we don't do

No ads. No tracking in the app. No location, no contacts. We don't sell your data, and we don't share it for advertising or track you across other companies' apps and websites.

Email

If you email us, we receive your email address and your message, and use them only to answer you.

Keeping and deleting your data

• Rooms: deleting a room moves it to Recently Deleted (Settings) for 30 days, then it's removed for good; you can also delete it right away there. Deleting the app removes everything stored on the device.
• iCloud: with sync on, a room removed for good from Recently Deleted is removed from iCloud too. You can also remove focalScan's iCloud data in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Storage.
• Our server record: it holds no name or contact details. If you'd like it removed, email us and we'll help.

Children

focalScan is a tool for measuring rooms and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Where data is processed

Our server runs on Google Firebase in the United States. The AI and text-to-speech services, and Google Analytics, may process data in the United States and other countries.

Changes

If the app or this website starts handling data differently, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
